Aug. 16, 1855: Kansas Territory gets its second governor, Wilson Shannon, after the first one has to sneak out of the territory in disguise.

Aug. 19, 1925: Dwight D. Eisenhower, native of Abilene, starts leadership training at the Command and General Staff School in Fort Leavenworth.
