The NCAA post season basketball tournament is called, "March Madness" and it happens at the same time every year. And it just so happens that the paddlefish spawning run, an angler's form of March Madness, also begins about the same time as the tournament. Paddlefish anglers that are basketball fans have to pick a favorite during the first couple weekends of the tournament. But the good news is now that the Kansas Jayhawks have been crowned National Champions, the paddlefish season is still going strong.

Kansas anglers have several options when it comes to paddlefish, often called spoonbill, snagging (they feed on plankton so they don't hit lures or bait) opportunities. The Kansas season runs March 15 through May 15 in several locations. Likely the most notable is on the Neosho River below the Chetopa and Burlington city dams. It's also open on the Marais des Cygne River below the Osawatomie Dam and at the Browning Oxbow Lake of the Missouri River. While these areas can be good, many die-hard paddlefish anglers don't mind jumping the border and trying their luck in Oklahoma, too.
