Open trade with Mexico led to the founding of a Kansas settlement more than 180 years ago. Fort Leavenworth, established May 8, 1827, by Col. Henry Leavenworth, was originally intended to protect travelers on the Santa Fe Trail.
Trade between the United States and Mexico had been closed until the Mexican Revolution in 1821. After trade was opened, enterprising traders began to make profitable trips through what was American Indian land. That opportunity for commerce led to the establishment of the Santa Fe Trail and the need for travelers to be protected.See the full content of this document
