Question: Why is the traffic signal at N.W. 46th Street and Topeka Boulevard set up to allow a left turn only on a protected green arrow, rather than allowing left turns on a green light, after yielding to oncoming traffic? Sometimes you have to sit through three cycles, with no one coming, before getting the green arrow. -- A.S., Topeka.

Answer: Shawnee County engineer Tom Flanagan said the county has investigated the possibility of adjusting the signal to provide the turning movement you described and found it would require the complete rewiring of the existing system at a cost the county couldn't justify for the benefit received. The intersection is scheduled for replacement as a roundabout in 2016 .
