Fifty-nine years ago today, L.C. Crouch was a 19-year-old U.S. Marine quartermaster hunkered down at the base of Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, a small island 600 miles south of Tokyo.

Ground force operations had commenced Feb. 19, 1945, on the 8- square-mile island, following three days of bombing. Then on Feb. 23, six Marines hoisted an American flag, measuring 54 inches by 28 inches, on a length of broken pipe at the highest point of the island.
