RETIREMENTS
Richard "R.O." Penick retired Aug. 1 from Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home after working more than 30 years for the company. Penick started working in funeral service in Fort Scott as a teenager in the 1930s. In 1971, he became a funeral director for Penwell-Gabel in Topeka. In 1978, he took a job in Mount Moriah, Mo., then rejoined Penwell-Gabel in 1982. Since 1985, he was a part-time funeral home support staff member with Penwell-Gabel. Ren Newcomer, president and owner of Newcomer Funeral Service Group, created the R.O. Penick Award in 2003 for support staff members who display leadership in teamwork, dedication and community involvement.
