Summary
Two fellows, original Kansas country guys who meant much to me in my 36 years here and who were greatly admired by others, recently died. They were old school in the best meanings of that phrase, in that they operated with honor, loyalty, duty and devotion to family while mixing in humor and wonderment into their everyday lives.
Thearon Lister was 91, and two stories he told me over the years stand out. One took place when he was 12 and living near Dover near Mission Creek. Many families were short of money, but in those days people lived closer to the land, and they learned to take and use fully what nature offered in the way of fish and game and forage.
