Summary


When I was growing up on the farm near Wamego, both of the drugstores in town had soda fountains. My friends and I would walk downtown after school and sit in the high-backed, dark wooden booths at Murphy's, sipping on cherry phosphates and sodas, while sharing gossip and laughter - until we got kicked out for being too loud. That's when we started going to Wamego Drug Store, just down the street, where the booths were newer, but the sodas just as fresh.

Murphy's is long gone, but Wamego Drug Store still stands, although in a different location and without the soda fountain. Many of the businesses I remember lining Lincoln Avenue when I was growing up are no longer there. There was Plumber's Grocery, the Victory Cafe, Gambles, Knostman's and Larson's clothing stores - all now gone.
