At first blush, making curbside recycling available to residents who would use the service sounds like a good idea and we support the Shawnee County Commission's decision to explore it, and the caution with which commissioners are approaching the issue.

If that doesn't exactly sound like a full-fledged endorsement of the curbside recycling proposal floated Monday by county refuse and recycling director Steve Bolton, it's because we aren't offering one now. But there are several aspects of Bolton's approach -- a plan to first measure public support, voluntary participation and a funding mechanism that doesn't include tax dollars -- that make the prospect appealing.
