Circus Atmosphere Can Lead to Bad Policy
A Republican politician who inherited a family tradition of moderation was fuming with frustration: "What a crazy place Congress is! My wonderful dad has to be turning over in his grave, and I am a close second!" Hosts and producers "really don't want us moderates on TV," the politician added, because they refuse to say outrageous things just to get tube time.
Zoo on the move Despite recent news stories, we can't overlook the great things happening at the Topeka Zoo. As one of our oldest institutions, the zoo serves as a centerpiece of our community and enhances the quality of life for children and families throughout northeast Kansas.
Topeka's public works director considers sidewalk repair a legitimate use of sales tax revenue that voters agreed during the spring elections to provide for infrastructure improvements. He's right. Sidewalk repair is a legitimate use of the funding under the ballot question voters approved by a substantial margin. Whether it's a wise use of money at this time is another question entirely.
The Blade, Toledo, Ohio, Sept. 21: If government can levy taxes on tobacco products to generate not only revenue but confer public health benefits with respect to smoking rates, why not apply the same principle to taxing sugary soft drinks to raise funds for health-care reform while fighting obesity? Obviously, the beverage industry has plenty of reasons to oppose the proposal, but strong advocates in the medical community make the idea one worth considering.
